Title: Venom Oil Shocks
Post by: jkracing on April 22, 2009, 05:26:33 PM
Hi everyone!  I found this forum after doing multiple web searches trying to find a set of Venom shocks for my Leo-X.  Great forum!  It's cool to see that there are people out there still enjoying their VMG/Leo-X/multiple other name trucks.  I think racing these would be a hoot, but living in Michigan it would be a bit of a drive to come out and race.

I have a question for those who are running or have ran the Venom shocks.  I ended up finding a set (on Amazon of all places) and to my disappointment 3 of the 4 shocks leak.   :'(

I took one apart and for the life of me I cannot firgure out what is supposed to be sealing the shaft.  There is a teflon bushing and a rubber o-ring, but no retainer to hold the o-ring at the bottom to seal the shaft, so when the shock pumps up and down the o-ring rides on the shock shaft and all the oil leaks out the bottom.  I'm hoping someone has some advice (besides junk them for Mini-T shocks ) on getting these to work and seal up.

Thanks!

Hey,, welcome to the site,,,  After trying to keep the oil in the shocks, I finally gave up.
What ive done is clean out all of the oil,, then using a q-tip, coat the inside of the shock body with thick grease.   The red stuff that you get at automotive stores works great for me, dont over-do it, just lightly coat the inner body , this seems to give just enough friction to dampen the shock travel,,  the best part is that this will not leak out the bottom . Ive also tried associated black grease, but it seems a little to thick.

The best part is you only have to re-grease the shocks once every month or two.. ,,

Ive also tried the losi shocks,, but they leaked too..

         Hope this helps.......

Thanks for the welcome!  The design of these shocks are terrible.  It's almost like it's missing a piece to keep the o-ring in place.  Last night I tried to tap the teflon bushing out and put the o-ring under it, but it sounds like you have quite a bit of experience with these so I'll leave that idea alone before I destroy something.  I like the grease idea.  I'll give that a go and see how it works.

I nearly bought a couple sets of 18T rear shocks to try those, but a quick Google search showed me that those are prone to leaking as well.  I have a set of Mini-T shocks on my Mini-T and they leak like crazy.  Why can't someone make a good mini shock that does not leak?   :frusty:
