this it pretty much the same battery I'm running in mine. 

7.2V 1600MAH NI-MH BATTERY MINI-T MLST MLST2 DYN1456 - eBay (item 260679916230 end time  Nov-17-10 07:33:56 PST)

this one even has the mini-t connector that you want.   the tamiya connector is different than what the VMG has so it will need to be changed to the right one.

you can run either the 8.4 volt or 7.2volt batteries.  (6 or 7 cell) and the higher the Mah # the better runtime you will get.
