What gearing are you running? I am running 12/53 on my 70T cars.  The motor will get hot but not hot enough to worry about.   Just make sure that you keep the motor bushings oiled and it will be fine.

I've never had a speed checker so I can't compare that to the speeds I'm getting.   Make sure that your mesh isn't too tight as that will cause too much drag and is also not good for the electronics.
